Student Capstone Sp 2012
Event Details

Mechanical Engineering student Gabriel Avila of Team Blood Plumbers explains the functionality of the prototype they developed as part of their senior capstone project to redesign an IV flow valve for the Neonatal ICU at Children's Hospital (Madera).  The patients blood passes both ways through the valve, and pharmaceuticals and fluids are also delivered to the patient.  Because of the small size of the neonates and the resulting low flow rates, the current vales (also used for adults) are susceptible to blood sedimentation.  The Team members were Sheena Truong, Adrian Garcia, Hien Lu, and Gabriel.  Blood Plumbers won first prize from the Judges and also submitted a Provisisonal Patent application on the valve they invented to the US Patents and Trademarks Office before their final review.
